A Coronation Sampler

image

The coronation of Edward VII and his wife Alexandra as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Empire took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 9 August 1902. Originally scheduled for 26 June of that year, the ceremony had been postponed on 24 June as the King had been taken ill with an abdominal abscess that required immediate surgery.

A lot of souvenirs were sold with the original date.

Last year a coronation sampler was languishing at an auction so we had to give it a home
The embroidery is expertly worked with the design probably taken from a coronation souvenir edition of a lady's magazine. There are areas on the sampler where you can just see the transfer peeking through.

The rose of England, the thistle of Scotland and the clover of Ireland is shown but no daffodil for Wales.

The sampler is scheduled to cleaned and conserved.

We have found another sampler on the internet which is so similar that it must have been stitched from the same pattern. It is interesting to see the different interpretation of the panels and how they have been personalised.

Note the title "Ye Goode Childes Sampler" which is different to the one in our collection. Therefore, this design was not sold printed directly onto the fabric. There are other small differences too.

There is a further sampler in the collection of Kim Lewis for the next coronation in 1911 of George V and Queen Mary. It is very reminiscent of the other two. The same Lady's magazine may have issued an updated version in their coronation souvenir edition.

This is a particularly beautiful version and we are pleased to see that Wales' daffodils have been included. We would like to thank Kim Lewis for allowing us to include photographs of her sampler.
